This experiment evaluates natural preservatives for homemade lotions by testing their effectiveness against microbial growth. The test involved six nature-derived preservatives (Leucidal Liquid, Leucidal Liquid PT, Leucidal Liquid SF, NataPres, Phytocide Elderberry OS, Phytocide Aspen Bark), a homemade propolis tincture, and two control lotions (with and without preservatives). A standardized lotion recipe was used, with variations in preservative type and concentration. Microbial tests were conducted using swabs and agar plates to detect bacteria and mold. After 17 hours, Leucidal Liquid SF, NataPres, and Phytocide Aspen Bark showed no microbial growth, while others exhibited bacterial or fungal contamination. The experiment concluded that preservatives like Leucidal Liquid SF effectively prevent microbial growth in water-based lotions, emphasizing the importance of using preservatives in formulations containing water or hydrosols. Key considerations include proper storage (avoiding jars in favor of pump tops), using distilled water, and understanding that natural preservatives may require higher concentrations or combinations for optimal effectiveness.
