Leaking Toilets

A leaking toilet can waste a significant amount of water and increase your water bill. To diagnose the issue, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank. If the water in the bowl changes color within 15 minutes, you need to replace the flapper or adjust the chain. The flapper is the rubber seal that closes the opening between the tank and the bowl. If the chain is too long, it can cause the flapper to not seal properly. Adjust the chain so that it has just enough slack to allow the flapper to close completely without pulling it up.

Drippy Faucets

Drippy faucets can waste water and increase your water bill. To fix a drippy faucet, you need to identify the type of faucet you have. There are three main types: compression, ball, and cartridge. Once you know the type, you can replace the worn washers. For a compression faucet, you need to remove the handle and the nut that holds the stem. For a ball faucet, you need to remove the handle and the cap that holds the ball. For a cartridge faucet, you need to remove the handle and the retainer clip that holds the cartridge. Replace the washers with new ones and reassemble the faucet.

Stripped Screws

Stripped screws can be frustrating to deal with. To grip a stripped screw, place a rubber band over the screw head and use a screwdriver to turn it. The rubber band will provide extra friction and allow you to turn the screw. If the screw is too stripped to grip, you can use a drill bit to make the hole larger and insert a new screw. Use a drill bit that is slightly larger than the original screw. Insert the new screw and tighten it with a screwdriver.

Rotted Window Frames

Rotted window frames can let in drafts and water. To fix a rotted window frame, remove the decayed wood and fill the hole with epoxy. Use a chisel to remove the decayed wood. Clean the area with a wire brush and a solvent. Mix the epoxy according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the epoxy to the hole and smooth it with a putty knife. Allow the epoxy to dry completely before painting it to match the surrounding wood.

Clogged Drains

Clogged drains can cause water to back up and create a mess. To unclog a drain, use baking soda and vinegar, salt and boiling water, a plunger, or a coat hanger snake. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with a cup of vinegar. Wait for the mixture to fizz and then flush it with hot water. Alternatively, pour a cup of salt down the drain and follow it with a pot of boiling water. Use a plunger to create a seal over the drain and pump it up and down vigorously. If these methods don’t work, use a coat hanger snake to remove the clog.

Stinky Drains

Stinky drains can create an unpleasant odor in your home. To eliminate the odor, use hot water with baking soda or vinegar. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with a pot of boiling water. Alternatively, pour a cup of vinegar down the drain and wait for it to fizz. Rinse the drain with hot water. Lemon peels in garbage disposals can help prevent odors. Place a few lemon peels in the garbage disposal and run it for a few seconds. The lemon peels will help neutralize the odor.

Cabinets That Don’t Close

Cabinets that don’t close properly can be frustrating to deal with. To fix this issue, adjust the hinge screws or replace the hinges. Use a screwdriver to loosen the hinge screws and adjust the position of the hinge. Tighten the screws to hold the hinge in place. If the hinges are worn out, replace them with new ones. Use a drill to remove the old hinges and insert the new ones. Tighten the screws to hold the new hinges in place.

Sensitive Smoke Detectors

Sensitive smoke detectors can go off when you cook. To prevent this, relocate the smoke detector or adjust the sensitivity settings. Use a fan during cooking to vent the smoke out of the room. Singing faucets can be annoying. To fix this issue, tighten or replace worn washers and clean the washer seat. Use a screwdriver to loosen the handle and remove the stem. Replace the worn washers with new ones. Clean the washer seat with a brush and a solvent. Use a brush to scrub the washer seat. Rinse it with hot water to remove any dirt or debris. Tighten the handle and stem to hold the new washers in place.

Weak Water Pressure
