Introduction
This guide details the construction of a custom wheeled backpack carriage designed to reduce backpack weight and improve load distribution during multi-day hikes. The system utilizes natural materials and advanced woodworking techniques to create a lightweight, foldable, and adaptable solution for carrying gear.

Mold Construction
Create a mold using a construction board to shape the beech veneer. Apply PVC glue to the veneer layers and use tape to temporarily set them in a three-layer configuration. Reinforce joints with bamboo-made wooden nails (cut from barbecue sticks) pressed into drilled holes filled with glue. Add diagonal wooden wedges for long joints.
Structural Assembly
Cut and sand veneer pieces using an electric saw or hand saw for precise cuts. Assemble box sides with piano hinges for foldability. Add a removable bottom panel and reinforce curved sections with additional veneer strips. Install a 14” air-tube wheel (from a children’s bike) to reduce bouncing over rough terrain. After testing, replace with a more stable wheel model if needed. Add a gum-rope system with hooks for securing gear. Incorporate a foldable seat for chair functionality.
Load Distribution
Use a hip belt with hinges to attach the carriage, allowing easy detachment. The design can carry 60-80L and distribute 60-70% of weight to the wheel, supporting 26kg loads over 6-day trips.
Hiking Pole Modification
Create a multifunctional hiking pole from carbon-finished bamboo with a walnut handle, sponge grip, and aluminum/steel pin. This pole can also serve as a tent central pole.
