Construct a low-cost, durable water storage tank using welded wire, asphalt felt, and Visqueen plastic. This method allows customization for various capacities (up to 3,500 gallons) and is suitable for garden, livestock, or emergency water storage needs. Key steps include:

  1. Site Preparation: Level the ground using a carpenter’s level and wooden stakes. Create a circular base by marking diameter with a central spike and cord. Remove debris and tamp soil to create a stable foundation.

  2. Wire Framework: Cut 14-gauge welded wire to form a circular cage with overlapping ends (calculate circumference using diameter × 3.14 + 12 inches). Trim vertical strands to create 2″ horizontal ‘fingers’ at each end for securing. Secure with wooden stakes and twist wire ends around uprights.

  3. Lining: Line the wire cage with asphalt roofing felt (single or multiple layers for puncture resistance). Secure with wire clips at the top. Add a thin layer of sand to the base for protection.

  4. Plastic Liner Installation: Place an 11′ x 11′ Visqueen sheet inside the cage, smoothing it out and trimming excess at corners. Add a second 17′ long Visqueen sheet over the first, centering it carefully. Fill the tank gradually while smoothing pleats to prevent wrinkles.

  5. Filling & Finishing: As water fills, add soil against the tank walls at 2-3″ depth to distribute pressure evenly. Trim the liner to leave a 3-4″ skirt at the top, fold it over the felt, and tuck it between the felt and wire frame for a secure seal.

Notes: The tank is resistant to punctures except from direct sharp impacts. Cost is approximately $34 for a 1,762-gallon reservoir.
